Festival of the Arts for Brazil and Ecuador

A dynamic mix of music, art, food and fashion from Brazil and Ecuador. A united social vision of two designers, milliners, the Brazil-ian Cristina Carneiro de Mendonca and the Ecuadorian Maria Cuji is the driving force of this Fund Raising Event. Ephemeral Brazil and Free Blessed have joined countries and resources in their efforts to support young people in conflict with the law by turning their lives around through Fashion and The Arts. Concert by virtuoso cellist Emily Burridge and Percussionist Felix Gibbons, inspired by the Amazonian rainforest. Ethical Fashion Show to include dresses by Acao Communitaria do Brasil, stunning accessories by Talentos Do Brasil and designer hats by Maria Cuji in Panama straw. Caipivodka, wine and canapés.

A TALE OF THREE CITIES: A Conference on Contemporary Brazilian Fashion in England
9 – 10 November 2012

We are proud to host the first ever conference to look at contemporary Brazilian fashion in England, and in the context of globalisation. We aim to create new dialogues between fashion producers and researchers in Brazil and in England, and to encourage interest in the study of Brazilian fashion. We will address researchers and students of fashion from English universities and from within the media. This event will bring speakers from Brazil – both practitioners and academics – as well as from London and Paris. The conference will be held at the London College of Fashion on the 9th and 10th November 2012. 5° Congresso ABEP-UK:Internacionalização da Ciência, Tecnologia e Conhecimento no Brasil Contemporâneo: Avanços e Desafios.

Esta será a quinta conferência realizada pela ABEP-UK ao longo de seus 32 anos e constitui uma excelente oportunidade para networking e debate acadêmico sobre os vários aspectos da vida do pesquisador brasileiro de todas as áreas do conhecimento no Reino Unido. O congresso deste ano será realizado no Centre of Latin American Studies, University of Cambridge no dia 10 de novembro de 2012, das 9 às 18h.

An evening with Granta and the King’s Brazil Institute
On 8 November, the best-selling Portuguese language edition of The Best of Young Brazilian Novelists will be published in English by Granta magazine. This issue opens a window on the dream-life of a country whose contemporary literature is mostly invisible to us, mainly due to lack of translated works. Join Granta Best Young Brazilian Novelists Michel Laub and Tatiana Salem Levy, translator Stefan Tobler, and Granta deputy editor Ellah Allfrey for readings and conversation about the next generation of Brazilian literature and its debut in the English-speaking world.

Conference: Mira Schendel

This conference will address the complex relationship of Schendelss thought to her visual production, focusing on the connections between her painterly practice, her graphic and sculptural works and her dialogues with a diverse range of philosophers, thinkers, artists and critics. Speakers include: Michael Asbury, Tanya Barson, Paulo Herkenhoff, Briony Fer, Taisa Palhares, Luis Perez Oramas, Geraldo de Souza Dias and Isobel Whitelegg. This conference is being held in anticipation of the exhibition Mira Schendel, the first major international retrospective of her work, planned for Tate Modern in 2013 and the Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo in 2014. The conference is organised in collaboration with TrAIN, the Centre for Transnational Art, Identity and Nation, University of the Arts, London and is supported by the World Collec-tions Programme.
